Zoom 2012 Call For Entries

Zoom Young People’s Film Festival is now accepting films for the Zoom Young Film Maker Awards, taking place during their festival on the final night – 30th March 2012. They are looking for films of all types – animations and dramas, documentaries and comedies, horror and sci-fi and everything in-between! So if you have a film that is made BY young people, send it to them by the 17th February. Click here for the submission form.

The 2012 Pembrokeshire Schools Film and Animation will be on July 5th and the deadline for entries will be the 1st June. The entry requirements will be the same as in previous years and more details will be available soon.

Films and Animations Update

The blog has now been updated with all of the films and animations from 2011. Click on Featured Movies or any of the schools in the left-hand menu (that entered this year’s event) to see their latest work. We now have a date for the 2012 Film Festival which is at the Torch Theatre on Thursday 5th July. The closing date for entries will be at the end of May. There will be more details to follow soon.

New Competition from Film Education

Be ©reative is a unique and exciting production competition for young people aged 11-19, offering recognition for UK creative talent plus great prizes for individual winners and their schools. Students need to create an original ad campaign that encourages young people to respect the UK film and TV industries and make the positive decision to choose official film and TV. Winning entrants in each of the 11-14 and 15-19 age categories get to take home their very own iPad. In addition, the winners’ school or college receives £5000. Runners-up prizes will also be awarded. Click on the image for more information.

Best Film or Animation at KS1: Pennar Community School
Best Animation at KS2: Saundersfoot C.P. School
Best Film at KS2: Ysgol Casmael Puncheston School
Best Film or Animation at KS3: Erin Redford from Milford Comprehensive
Best Animation at KS4 & 5: Danny Tose from Ysgol y Preseli

Innovation in the Curriculum Award: Templeton C.P. School

Industrial Light and Magic Award: Micky and Danny Tose from Ysgol y Preseli
Western Telegraph Audience Award: Sageston C.P. School

The Audience Award was voted for by the 260 children, teachers and parents who attended the event. The runners-up in the Audience Award were Lamphey C.P. School (2nd) and Neyland C.P. School (3rd). All of the award winners will go forward to represent Pembrokeshire at the National Schools Film Awards. Thank you to all of the schools who attended this year’s festival to share their films with a big audience on the big screen in a big theatre! 2011 Film and Animation Festival

Here are entry forms and further information about this year’s Film Festival which is at the Torch Theatre on the 7th July. We have extended the deadline for entries to June 10th due to the short Summer Term. The attachments include a poster you can put up in school to invite entries from individual students. This poster could be very useful for secondary schools who may have some talented independent film makers and animators who may want to enter their work. Film Club Free For Welsh Schools

Here is a great new opportunity for schools to access free films through this UK initiative. We have 2 schools operating Film club in Pembrokeshire, but now all schools have equal opportunity. This initiative has been free to schools in England for many years and now is free to access in Wales.

Announcement of the National Film Awards Winners

Big congratulations to Lamphey CP and Dani Tose (from Ysgol y Preseli) who won Best Film 8-13 and Best Animation 14-25 at the Welsh Film Awards recently. Also, I finally have a date for the UK National Film Award winners announcement that Dame Floella Benjamin has filmed. Unfortunately, there is to be no big awards event in London this year, due to the current financial climate, so the announcement will be made on Schoolstube website www.schoolstube.com on 24^th March at 10.30am. If you are one of the shortlisted schools we hope you will be able to watch the video and see how your schools have fared. These are the shortlisted schools:

Zoom Cymru Young People’s Film Awards

I’ve just heard that Zoom are calling for entries for this year’s Welsh film and animation awards. Closing date is the 14th February. Go to the Awards website to enter:

It would be great to have your films from last year’s Pembrokeshire festival entered if you have the time to get them in. I’ve been told that this year’s Zoom festival is going to be bigger and better than ever so should be well worth entering!

While we’re on the subject of film festivals…This year’s Pembrokeshire Film and Animation Festival will be on the 7th July at the Torch Theatre. The closing date for entries will be May Half Term. There will be an optional theme this year of ‘Silent Cinema’. Further details to follow soon.

Ffilmyouth: using film with children and young people. Chapter, Cardiff, 9 February 2011.
If you want to use film, filmmaking or animation with children and young people, you should attend Ffilmyouth. This one-day training conference is for teachers (Primary, Secondary, FE), youth workers, education advisory staff, filmmakers, cinema educators and media and arts practitioners.
A range of sessions (led by experienced practitioners from Welsh and UK-wide organisations) covers film, literacy and the curriculum; film and youth work; filmmaking with limited equipment; using world cinema and archive film; film education in cinemas; where to find resources and more.

National Film and Animation Awards

Good news! 6 films and animations from Pembrokeshire schools shortlisted for the 2o1o National Film and Animation Awards. Here is the message we received today:
“We managed to get the Judging Day completed just before the snow and thought I ought to let you know which of your schools were shortlisted for our awards. The standard was very high this year and we are very grateful to you and your schools for their hard work created some great films. The successful schools in the following categories were:

Pennar CP School – KS1 Animation (“Crocodeil, Pysgota, Caws!”)
Sageston CP School – KS2 Film (“The School Inspection’)
St Teilos RC School – KS2 Mixed Media (“The Creation”)
Ysgol Y Preseli – KS4 Animation (“The Tell Tale Heart”)
Ysgol Y Preseli – KS4 Mixed Media (“Toe The Line Forever”)
Portfield School – SEMERC Award (“Road Safety”)

Please thank all the schools who sent in entries and I will be in touch to congratulate those that have been shortlisted. We will be sending certificates out to all of the children who participated to create the shortlisted films.
